National Hunting and Fishing Day and Wonders of Wildlife

It excites us to see new people, especially young people, attracted to the outdoor sports. That's why we've been such enthusiastic supporters of the National Hunting and Fishing Day (NHFD) program and its new headquarters at Wonders of Wildlife, a spectacular fish and wildlife museum and aquarium.

Hunting and Fishing Day is celebrated annually on the fourth Saturday of September. It was created by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and formalized by Congress in 1971 and has been recognized by every U.S. president since then. NHF Day and the hundreds of public celebrations that are held on this day at sites across the country help educate the public and build appreciation for the conservation accomplishments of hunters and anglers who provide more than $1.7 billion a year for fish and wildlife conservation, habitat protection, and resource management programs.

On September 24, 2005, a special celebration in Springfield, Missouri, was held to welcome Hunting and Fishing Day to its new home at Wonders of Wildlife.

Wonders of Wildlife is the only hunting- and fishing-focused facility that's both affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution and accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association. With over 225 species of live animals in natural habitats, Wonders of Wildlife offers the unique opportunity to see nature in an up-close and personal way. Visitors encounter an American bald eagle, beavers, river otters, bobcats, sharks, moray eels, and much more as they stroll along the walking path. They can experience flowing streams, a wooded forest, and an Ozark cave. Wonders of Wildlife builds on the long tradition of American conservation by keeping people aware of the value of wildlife and wild places and involving them in outdoor activities like hunting and fishing.
