I like it so far
By Patrick

Comments about Men's 44449 Elite Algerian Field Jacket:
I like it so far, but I just bought it. The upper half zip is a little unusual, but the velcro secures what the zipper does not. I wish it were warmer in the winter but I think it will make a perfect spring jacket.

Does not have a full length zipper ...
By Dave
from Wash DC
About Me Hunter
The zipper only goes down halfway and then you're relying on the velcro to keep the jacket closed. So if you have lots of activity, its going to keep opening on you. I understand the purpose, for tactical reasons for folks doing concealed carry. Also, it is a deep black and not a more faded grayish black as the picture on the site. Not nearly as attractive of a jacket as it appears to be from the pictures. I wanted something that could be a day to day jacket and also function for concealed carry. Haven't found it yet, but will keep looking.

Goofy
By Archer

I think you need to put in more pics and also some showing a person wearing it. Pockets kind of goofy. Not comfortable, binding. Zipper runs from neck to sternum???
Great jacket for the field.
By tvphotog

I'm a photographer and use this jacket in the field. It's front lower pockets are big enough to through in a lens securely. The shoulder pockets and pen slits are perfect to keep names and addresses on people in photographs.I think this jacket should have a double pull zipper, rather than a 3/4 length one. That way, you could keep it zipped up in colder weather, and still be able to unzip it from the bottom to reach things underneath. I understand this is a replica of a 1958 model, but the zipper could be updated.

Good but not great
By C
from Washington, DC
Not a bad jacket overall. Given the size and number, the pockets are useful for carrying anything. My two complaints are the zipper and the cuffs. A two-way zipper could have been used to accomplish the same end instead of the half zipper version used here. The second issue is the goofy cuff design that uses both buttons and elastic. Would have rather seen one or the other. The elastic that is in use isn't very comfortable and I need to turn the cuffs up to make them work. I'll probably see if a tailor shop can help but then that's an added cost. For what I use this jacket for, weekends, outdoors, work around the house, it's not bad but for the money paid it's not the best value for the money.

Great jacket. size & zipper comments
By HBost

About Me Occasional Shooter
The jacket looks and feels great. The size is bigger than I expected and the pockets are a bit bulky. The main issue I have with the jacket is the zipper which only goes half the way down front. The jacket can be closed with velcro but I would have preferred the zipper to go all the way as on regular jackets.

This one is not for me..

About Me Gun Collector
This coat did not fit me properly. No waist adjustment like a normal field jacket, velcro closures are too noisy, cuff closures are not standard adjustable or elastic.

Good to go.
By SemperGumby

I've owned this jacket in black for several years now and no matter how my loadout changes, this can hold whatever I need. As others have said, it's best layered with a hoodie or sweater in cold weather, though it's great as a stand-alone jacket in the fall season. Just for fun, I loaded this thing up with 3 spare mags, a light, baton, OC spray, two knives, multi-tool, chem lights, small survival kit, tourniquet, quikclot, gauze, and chewing gum without drawing any undue atttention although it added considerable weight. I only did it as an experiment, but the point was made. Perhaps the most appreciated feature of this jacket is that is both stylish and durable. My jacket's been shoved in pack after pack, worn through wind, rain, snow, hail, mud and survived a few scrapes across concrete while working security. Still going strong and I'll definitely purchase a new one if mine ever wears out.

Useful light jacket

This isn't a heavy jacket for very cold weather. Would work well with a vest or fleece underneath. Plenty of pockets for all your stuff.

So good, I'd like to buy YOU one, too!

About Me Competitive Shooter
Overall, a well-constructed and versatile jacket. Sizing allows for layering as seasons change. By itself, it will keep you warm on a chilly August evening. Great as a windbreaker out on the beach as evening falls. A multitude of pockets lends it to shooting, photography, metal detecting with the kids.I'd have liked to see the cuffs with a zippered bellows and velcro closure to accomodate gloves or mittens in frosty weather. The buttons are a little labor intensive if you ask me. But, I can fix that...Still, this jacket is a quality piece of outerwear that I will recommend quite readily to anyone.

Practical and Smart
By Herr Becker
from Portland, OR
I was very satisfied by the design of this jacket. The pockets are ample enough to carry a small pistol without imprinting, as well as most other essentials (trauma/med kit, map, compass, energy bars, ammo and spare mags, etc). This jacket will hold a large amount of gear and still remain comfortable. It is even comfortable underneath a 50-pound pack. This jacket is wearable in most elements. The water resistant coating is near waterproof, and since it is cotton, it is very breathable. The elastic cuffs keep out the wind and rain, and the drawstring at the waist provides additional wind protection. There is no hood, so pack a balaclava or waterproof bucket hat in the pocket. This jacket is a bit bulky in a backpack. There is no way around that issue, but this jacket also removes the need to pack along any utility bags or day packs since it will carry so much.Roominess is what makes this jacket versatile. In cold weather, it allows for using layers of warm clothing. When worn with just a t-shirt in warm climates, the jacket will help limit sun exposure while allowing for generous air circulation. The "vintage-with-a-modern-twist" style is a real eye-pleaser, as a nice mix of historical provenance and modern utility is hard to ignore. My friend said it looked like the jacket his dad wore in the French paras, albeit with modern updates. I get lots of compliments: at the range, in the woods, in camp and even from my fiance, who is a vegetarian pacifist. The coyote brown is perfect for high desert activities/training/operations. I'll be taking this with me when I hunt antelope in SE Oregon. Overall, this is a solid jacket!

Excellent jacket, however...
By Mr. Pond
from England
I use this jacket for plain-clothes operations, surveillance and also wear it off duty. The jacket is very well constructed, is extremely comfortable and has a wealth of different pockets that can fit all sorts of equipment. I found it to be at least half a size too big but then it fits fine when worn over overt body armour. My only criticism of the jacket is the ridiculous zip design. The zip barely reaches half way down the jacket. I realise why this was done - sweeping either side away to quickly access a holstered weapon is very easy, however for non-uniformed use I feel that a full zip with dedicated concealed-carry pockets would be a much better solution.
Nice light jacket

Great jacket. I was a little disappointed with the way the cuffs are designed. Other than that, it's a great jacket for spring or fall.
Relocate Draw string to the waist
By Ron

Jacket would be perfect if you were to add or relocate drawstring to the waist as in most military field jackets.

Great all purpose jacket!
By Chris the Runner
from Washington DC
I wear this coat as a casual jacket. It's great to wear to and from work. I usually leave a sportcoat in the office and this is perfect for getting back and forth and protecting my work clothes. It works well with khakis or jeans and a sport shirt. I looked for a long time before I took the plunge and I'm glad I waited. It was well worth it.There is absolutely no shortage of pockets on this jacket. The cuffs are a weird combo of elastic and buttons. My preference would have been for either button cuffs or a velcro tab but what is here is okay. The drawstring is okay although if it werent there it might not matter much. Neither of these are deal breakers. The jacket is roomy and I enjoy wearing it. Keep in mind though that this is a jacket--it's not a coat---and it's not going to keep you much warmer than a heavy canvas windbreaker. If you want to wear it the cold you'll need to layer.

The Final Solution

BROWN could be more RED. Better design than most SAFARI JACKETS. A LIGHTWEIGHT drawstring HOOD rolled invisibly into the collar might help. All cotton rip-stop fabric is a huge plus.

Great jacket, runs larger than expected
By Lowcountry Yankee
from South Carolina
Jacket is nicer than I expected but the green color is different than I thought it would be. More of a blue tint than an OD green. I typically order large or XL but went smaller and this feels big. Pockets are big and rigid so that might explain it. Mildly stylish but more for service.

Great Jacket but not for me.
By FMRadioman

I really liked this jacket but ended up returning it since I was buying it for casual use and this really does look like a tactical jacket. The fabric is very nice, the olive color is nice, the amount of pockets is great.

Great as a light jacket. For colder weather add a vest. Plenty of pockets. If you loved your Army field jacket you'll love this jacket.

Functional for the everyday man
By A. Wheeler
from Bloomsburg, Pa
I bought this for my husband who was looking for a funtional jacket. Such as the one he had while serving in the Army Rangers. He wanted something light-weight but rugged. He also wanted to look sharp and pulled together. Essentially a jacket that would carry him from a trail to a hockey game, then out to dinner. This one works perfectly for those needs. It has more than enough storage space for anything you could imagine. It would be perfect for traveling. Especially on a flight where you could save on your carry-on for small items. It's also great for a short hike so as to not have to carry a small pack. My husband does not mind the cold. This is a thinner jacket than what I expected. If you mind the cold this is not a winter jacket. The only complaint I had upon arrival was that the drawstring is a thicker string-like material. I expected a heavier material on a jacket such as this. The drawstring almost seems out of place. We would buy this product again.

Nice jacket
By para3

I like the half zip. I know it has gotten some abuse but it makes drawing a weapon very easy. Jacket is very sharp looking and gets a lot of positive comments. Nice weight that and sizing that layers well.
With a few changes it would be a five.
By Mudrunner
from Salem, Oregon
I understand the half zipper, but a full length double zipper would make it a much better item. It handles a J frame very well, but that it about it. Needs a larger lower inside pocket and the inside upper pocket is placed too high. The jacket is well made, true to size and comfortable, with the exception of the collar. This is warm weather jacket only. And, it looks pretty good.

Great Product, super functional for concealed carry, very good coverage of waist line, elimnates all pattern and printing of firearm. the half zipper makes access to firearm fast and efficient. Lots of pockets for flashlight, mags, phone,etc...
